Azucar's Baby Shower

by Lucky Red Hen on February 19, 2007

Azucar is having a baby. Therefore, we threw her a shower. I say “we” with fervor because it was definitely a joint effort. Thankfully I have friends that save my hide (threw my back out earlier in the week): Jenny sent the invites and brought croissants (assembled too), Cathy brought chicken salad for the croissants, Julie brought YUMMY salsa y chips and Courtney came with dolce de leche sticks and healthy chips (did I miss anyone?). We had a lovely time celebrating Azucar and baby.

Happy Chinese New Year (Sunday)

by Lucky Red Hen on February 18, 2007

恭喜發財,紅包拿來
“Happy New Year, now give me a red envelope.”

Y’all know I’m not Chinese, but I like Chinese people, Americanized Chinese Food, Feng Shui, bento, Buddha, rice, the color red, bamboo, paper lanterns, dragons, watercolor, inari maki and lettering.

My 1/2 bath on the main floor is decorated with Asian flare: the walls & ceiling are painted a dark chocolate brown, a golden wooden Buddha sits in the corner on the floor, a small ornate stool waits under the sink for the vertically challenged, smooth stones rest in the bowl of the sink with handmade soaps settled within, matchstick blinds are attached along the 1/2 bottom of the walls running up and down, a hundred year old handmade apron from China (thanks Sandra) hangs above the toilet, 6 votive candles rest patiently upon the shelf next to a miniature Chinese plate (thanks Steph) and brown textured candles. A giant painted fan from San Fransisco in muted colors of green, beige and gray spreads along the largest wall (Buddist friends of mine told me the writing on the fan means prosperity, good luck and peace).

According to Wikipedia, my Chinese Zodiac animal is the Boar (good thing, because I like pork). I knew that from the first time I met my bio-dad, Gary, and his wife, Jo, 10 years ago. We went to a museum in Portland that had Asian artifacts on display. They bought me a small card that identified my Zodiac according to my birthdate. A couple years ago when vacationing on the Oregon coast (I love it there), I came across a solitary urban-style necklace with my Zodiac on it that now hangs in my bathroom when I’m not wearing it. Think I’ll have to put it on today.

According to customary superstition, the Pig type is usually an honest, straightforward and patient person (I don’t know about ‘patient’ but the rest is certainly true). They are a modest, shy character (not so much) who prefers to work quietly behind the scenes (believe it or not, I do). When others despair, they are often there to offer support (mm-hm). This type of person is reserved with those they do not know too well (wish that were true), but as time passes and they gain confidence, those around them may discover a lively and warm-hearted person (and more tender-hearted than anyone realizes) behind that mask of aloofness. Despite those born in the year of pig having a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, they have few close friends who understand them and share their inner thoughts and feelings (this is COMPLETELY true, came to that conclusion just recently). It is easy to put trust in pig type; they won’t let you down and will never even attempt to do so (true dat). Such people simply want to do everything right according to social norms (‘want’ being the active word).

Also according to customary superstition, that these people are not vengeful creatures (I don’t like to spread bad kharma because it’ll just bounce right back atcha). If someone tries to take advantage of them, the pig type tend to withdraw to reflect on the problem and protect themselves (because nobody else can do it for me). All they need in such situations is a little time (since I don’t often use a filter; gotta work on that) to find a constructive way to respond (I can come up with something clever). The people of the pig type are conservative creatures of habit. They dislike being made to travel too far from familiar surroundings (I like precise directions and don’t like getting lost; I like traveling by air to visit friends), unless it is a trip to the countryside (wouldn’t it be lovely to have a place in the English countryside?). They love nature and are never happier than when they are out somewhere, far from the city (sans TV, cell phones, computers but I MUST have my camera; I [heart] the sound of nature… wind through the trees, birds chirping, small animals scattering through the forest floor and water flowing and bubbly).

There is a tolerant (sometimes TOO much) and peaceful side to the character of Pig types. Such people are never afraid to allow others their freedom of expression (who am I to tell people how to behave?); they do not want to cause arguments and if there is any way to avoid arguing, they will probably take this option (no matter which ‘side’ I’m on, I do enjoy playing devils advocate so that both sides are represented fairly – many times both sides are right in their own way). They are not weak, however, and if the situation forces them to fight these people will rise to the occasion, whether it is to defend themselves or those close to them (I probably defend others more than myself; I can take the heat because I am confident but don’t like seeing others put down). People of the Boar type are the most admired by others (‘admired’?).

Red Packets (I like this custom)
Traditionally, red packets are passed out during the Chinese New Year’s celebrations, from married couples or the elderly to unmarried juniors. It is common for adults to give red packets to children. Red packets are also known as 压岁钱 (Ya Sui Qian, literally, age suppressing money) during this period.

The red envelopes always contain money, usually varying from a couple of dollars to several hundred. The amount of money in the red packets should be of even numbers, as odd numbers are associated with cash given during funerals (白金 : Bai Jin). Since the number 4 is considered bad luck, money in the red envelopes never adds up to $4. However, the number 6 is considered lucky, and $6 is commonly found in the red envelopes.

Low-light with Rebekah at PUG

by Lucky Red Hen on February 17, 2007

This is my friend, Rebekah. She is a great photographer and pseudo model (although she won’t admit to the latter). Here are the long-awaited pics of her from the January PUG meeting (photography group) in Salt Lake City. Brody Dezember had us shoot in the dark with only a tiny 4×4 spotlight for light. It was a great stretch for me (hadn’t been a big fan of low-light shooting). My exposure was all over the place so the images came out a bit too grainy in some shots but sometimes that’s delicious, especially in black & white. Let me know what you think… unless you just want to be mean then don’t say anything at all :o)

See how dark it was in Brody’s studio? That window ROCKS!

Saw these GORGEOUS chairs & set-up chess board next door through the window. I could lick this picture because of the colors (that dirty yellow, plum, black, cream and grey… mm-mm-mmmm).
Here’s my cute friend, Stacy, on the fly (blurry but I like her smirky smirk).

There are more pics from this night on the other photographers blogs: Katie, Dustin and Brody. Looking at theirs I notice the differences (of course) but also that they didn’t post a gazillion pics like I did – woops! Hope you don’t mind all the images.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip set

by Lucky Red Hen on February 16, 2007

There are 2 shows I watch (TiVo) on a regular basis: Grey’s Anatomy and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Studio 60 doesn’t make sense; it’s a TV show about a TV show where their main concern is whether a commercial makes one of the actors look stupid (I didn’t make that up, stole it from a GOOD friend). But I LOVELOVELOVE the actors and their chemistry. I’ve watched Matthew Perry for 10 yrs on Friends, Bradley Whitford on West Wing and Amanda Peet in A Lot Like Love (gotta pull that one out again and watch it) and Igby Goes Down (careful of that one but she was UNbelievable). Not sure how long the show will last (rumor has it that it’s not ‘Must See TV’ but I don’t miss a single episode).

When I flew into LAX last week I got dropped off at the Warner Bros. studio to hang out with a GOOD friend that I’ve known for almost 10 years. I LOVE this friend!!! We walked the grounds, saw some sights and had lunch. Other than just BEING with my friend, the best part was seeing the Ocean’s 13 casino set, E.R. and the Studio 60 set. The latter was my most anticipated and I was NOT disappointed. We walked through quickly, the lights were mostly off (thus the crummy lighting for my digital pocket camera) and the place was empty. If you’re a fan, you’ll recognize most of these pics…

Eating is Overrated

by Lucky Red Hen on February 16, 2007

Monday was my first day back from my trip and I was pretty bummed leaving behind all those great people. Figured I’d try to feed my sorrows because a full belly has made me feel better in the past. For lunch I had leftover stuffed crust cheese pizza, Ruffles and dip. Didn’t fulfill me. So I suggested One Man Band (Piper calls it Ban Ban) for dinner that night and got my regular chicken fried steak, gravy, baked potato and scone with honey butter (and a few swipes of my fork on Jack’s pancakes and Piper’s sausage). Nope. Still didn’t feel better. Made me feel wasteful of all that food and money that paid for it. After that meal I had a light bulb moment: I do NOT feel better just because I eat something. Food is not the answer. Food does NOT make me happy. I LIKE to eat (everyone who knows me knows that; especially Erin wink wink) but this week I don’t.

Monday: stuffed crust pizza, chips, dip, chicken fried steak, baked potato, scone & scraps.
Tuesday: Slimfast-style drink, Slimfast-style drink and a handful of mini-baby carrots.
Wednesday: Slimfast-style drink and 6″ turkey sub.
Thursday: Slimfast-style drink, about 15 grapes and handful of almonds.
Friday: Slimfast-style drink that I just finished with ibuprofen (threw out my back on Tuesday)

I’m just NOT hungry. Plus, my back is in so much pain that I don’t feel like getting up to prepare anything. Luckily the kids are either at school or Linda’s playing (thank goodness for Linda – love YOU). So it’s not like I’m white-trash mom laying on the couch ignoring my children :o)

Then last night I took a nap at 6:45 (tired of all the pain). Woke about 10:30pm, watched School for Scoundrels (wouldn’t recommend it but Billy Bob Thornton really does it for me) then jumped into the guest bed to go back to sleep because Piper was in mine and I couldn’t move her.

What in the world is going on with me?

Favorites from Photography Unconference

by Lucky Red Hen on February 13, 2007

This is Serena. She is a beautiful person with a gorgeous engagement ring (thanks to Jeremy for letting me guess the stats). She was gracious enough to pick me up at LAX, drop me off at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank so I could see Pete (AND take a peek at the Ocean’s 13 set and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) for a while then pick me back up and drive us to Pismo Beach, CA for the conference. She was lucky enough to also sleep with me for 3 nights and drive me back to LAX on Sunday (we took a detour to the beach for sunset pics). We had lots of giggles. I took this picture of her. It’s one of the favorites of my trip. SHE is one of the favorites from my trip.

This is Robin of Bellissima Photography in Pittsburg, PA. Honestly, I was a little nervous meeting her because she’s such a smart and put together business woman (she’s also a full time engineer) that I thought my crazyness would rub her wrong. My thoughts of her all changed when we had breakfast the first morning and she shared a secret with me that we have in common – how fun is THAT? Her seminar on business and album design has changed my way of thinking for the better. I’m so excited to implement all the ideas I have! She is one of my favorites from the trip! Oh, and she brought TO DIE FOR truffles, suggested by BruceBruceBruce – so yummy and they melt in your mouth (but I won’t be having anymore for a while because another favorite from my trip and I are cutting out soda, junk food, fast food and candy). She thought of getting us altogether for a time-share type situation so we could have a house on the CA coast to vacation at and gather together again. We’ve decided one of us will have to win a lottery to have enough $ to buy one (those houses are outrageous).

And this is Ryan P Flynn. He’s the one I’d hand-pick to be family. We had been in contact before the conference via email because I had questions about editing. He lives in Seattle so we had that in common as well (and blowing head gaskets on our Toyota trucks – but mine was back when I had James and now my neighbors dad owns him). I wasn’t the only one that felt this way toward him; guys and girls alike have told me how easy going and sweet he is to be around. The spirit about him is peaceful and I feel lucky to know him. What a huge help he was with helping me learn my new camera (switched to Canon last week). There is quite the learning curve with new gear but I figured most of it out pretty quick and am LOVING the switch. Thankfully I could run over to Ryan and ask him to fix something if I got stuck. I sure know how to pick ’em. He’s one of my favorites from the trip too. Hopefully we’ll be hearing wedding bells for him and his cute girlfriend so I can fly up (or live there by then) and attend/shoot his wedding. Awe.

This is Serena again with one of my favorite pictures of ME taken this weekend. I’m not sure who had the camera (they kept passing it around, but I think it was Ryan that took this one). I think Serena and I look so cozy cute together. You should hear her laugh; that’s cute too. She’s getting married April 2008 and I think I’m a shoe-in for an invitation (hint hint). Haha. I just remebered that I’m not a very good hinter – not subtle enough to call it a hint. More like kicking down the door :o)

This is a part of how crazy I am. Um, lay on the floor and let’s see if we can make a picture out of it. Umm, no. But it’s fun to see me act like a dork, huh? There were other cameras taking pictures too so maybe one of these on the floor turned out better than this one. Sure makes a difference what angle you’re at when taking pics. That’s why I’m a professional – it’s my job to know the best angles.

Here’s Aimee again. This time you can see her in full splendor. Guess how many kids she has. I didn’t take this picture. Again, the cameras were all over the place. Sure do feel lucky that I got this image on my card though. She’s just a peach and I can’t wait to see her again at WPPI.

This is Riley, Aimee’s brother, my weight loss buddy and a new Bestie. He’s the one that came up with the great line about deja-vu (see yesterdays post). One of the first cool things about meeting him (although it seems like we’ve known each other forever; like I felt with Jeff and Doug – My Lisa knows what I mean) was that he was mostly along to help Aimee (and get some practice shooting) but offered to help me with my equipment. The lenses are the heaviest part of camera gear and it kills my shoulders and back. I probably had him carry my bag once, feeling a little guilty treating him like a pack mule LOL. He’s a big favorite of the trip. Our sarcasm and sense of humor are neck and neck which made it fun for sparring and joking around. Think I surprised him with my quick wit to which he responded with a challenge of sorts to see who’s funnier (I am, by the way – just kidding – we’re 50/50). I mentioned before what foods we’re cutting out for our weight loss but we’re also accountable to each other for exercising at least 3 times a week. A friend of mine down the street is letting me use her workout equipment anytime and I can bring Piper too. Y’all can encourage me all you want because I could use a little umph to get me going sometimes.

Here’s another favorite, John Michael Cooper. He was one of my favorite guest photographers (the other was Jose Villa – so gentle yet stunning photography). This guy was so nice to share his expertise and show us some of his tricks (he takes pictures in pitch darkness using only handheld flashlights to light the subject with a 20 second long shutter – amazingly cool). When I first met him I offered to do whatever I could to help him since he was being so generous (I got to hold lights and shake a tree). He’s such an inspiration and just cool to be around. He showed us how to handle shooting in the rain and how to see the big picture of an image. Notice Riley and Aimee in the background (she’d like to say that she was NOT looking at JMC’s bootie – just so that’s on record). I didn’t take this photo, it’s was taken by Mark (who didn’t realize what a smart alec I could be until he met me in person; takes one to know one, to quote a 2nd grader LOL).

A New Bestie… Miss Aimee

by Lucky Red Hen on February 13, 2007

WARNING: I’m pouring my heart out on this one. If that doesn’t interest you (it’s sappy) then don’t read this post and wait for the next one (coming soon – I’m working through all my images).

Introducing one of my new ‘Besties’, Aimee. She lives in Arizona with her husband and gaggle of kids. We met at a photography conference with 100 other photographers over the weekend on the California coast. This event has changed my life; it’s been turned upside down and I’m completely serious. Like a ton of bricks just fell on me (and I LOVE it). There was so much learning, sharing and laughing (y’all know how I like to laugh). We were lucky to have several amazing photographers to lead us in shoots with volunteer couples and models on the beach, in the rain and walking about town. Yeah, rain. Flying to CA you wouldn’t expect 3 days of rain but that’s what we got. It was actually invigorating to work outside our box, so to speak.

Anyway, back to Aimee. Have you ever met someone for the first time that you feel like you’ve known forever? That’s what happened with me and Aimee. Her brother, another bestie (so glad Cathy came up with this expression so I can have more than 1 best friend), explained it like this…

“It’s like trying to figure out deja-vu. When you try to
think about what exactly it is you saw,
it’s gone in a flash,
and all you’re left with is a feeling.”
It’s like you just KNOW each other without having to explain a thing. That happened with me and My Lisa upon our first meeting – it was instant, difficult to explain. Aimee and I laughed like school girls LONG and HARD when we were together (wish we had more time to laugh). She said her abs hurt in the morning from the workout I gave her. It was pee-your-pants kind of laughter that gets funnier as you try and calm down then the other person makes a peep and starts it all over again. We have the same taste in food and pink lemonade (as long as it’s got the right ratio of tart to sweet). There’s no explaining each other. Sure, you tell stories and share experiences but there’s no judgement or criticism – just a bunch of love. I couldn’t get enough of her and just wanted to stuff her in my pocket and take her home; maybe put her in a little terrarium on my kitchen counter. Perhaps next to the giant rooster?

When I got on the plane to fly back home Sunday night, I couldn’t help but think about the time I had and all the changes that will make my business better. As I sat in a middle seat, I started leaking out of both eyes. I wasn’t bawling like a baby (that came later), it was just a gentle tear fest that didn’t want to stop for a while. Tried to think about why I was crying (were they happy or sad tears) but I guess that just made it worse because I just kept thinking about all the great people I now count as friends and family. The kind of family you get to hand pick (that’s a little shout-out to Ryan). After a while I got the leak under control (call a plumber already) and read the paper to take my mind off of it. As we prepared for landing the leaking started back up again when I was brought to the realization that my weekend is really over and I was going back to the real world (it was like a fantasy, really). I was excited to be back with my family and smooch on my kids, don’t get me wrong – I love my home (not Utah as a whole, just where I live), but the euphoria from the weekend is something I didn’t want to wear off. As Ben asked about the trip I told him about the logistics because when I started talking about the people I will miss the leak showed up again.

As soon as I got home I called Aimee to find out how their drive back home was going. That was when I realized that the euphoria doesn’t have to end. My new besties are just a phone call/text away.

So there’s a little glimps into the tender heart of Shannon (gotta stop before I leak again). No matter how tough I act I can be a cry baby at the drop of a hat (like I have been since Sunday night).

My cup runneth over. Aren’t I lucky?

ABC Meme

by Lucky Red Hen on February 2, 2007

A – Available or Single: Neither, I’m happily married (9yr anniversary this year) to Ben.

B – Best Friend: My Lisa, 10 yrs this year; but I have numerous “besties” (you know who you are).

C – Cake or Pie: Pumpkin pie (anytime of year) or cheesecake (our wedding cake my mom fabulously made; 5 tiers and all handmade). Brownies.

D – Drink of Choice: Lemonade, preferably pink. Raspberry Italian Soda with Cream. Hot chocolate with Postum (lots) or Pero (teaspoon) and hazelnut flavoring.

E – Essential Item You Use Everyday: Computer. On it throughout the day, usually. I should be using my camera everyday (getting my new one on MONDAY – I’m so excited).

F – Favorite Color: To wear, pink and/or brown. To look at, red and/or black.

G – Gummy Bears or Worms: Pronounced “goo-me” (Gumi) in Germany and soft, squishy bears all the way (although I could do without the green ones).

H – Hometown: Don’t have one but some I say are Clovis (6), Spokane (6) and Seattle/Redmond (5); I say I’m from Redmond, WA (born in San Diego).

I – Indulgence: Éclairs; I prefer them naked (without the chocolate on top unless it’s REALLY good chocolate but the grocery stores usually just pile icing on top – barf).

J – January or February: February because it’s closer to getting winter over with. Ben and I celebrate VD either before or after the actual day (14th) but not on Friday or Saturday.

K – Kids and Names: Jack is 7 tomorrow and he’s named after my grandpa who didn’t sire children of his own and Piper who’s a kick in my pants. I hope that there are 2 more out there (but I’m not physically birthing them); a boy that was born in ’01 and his sister who was born in ’02 and they are mentally, emotionally and physically sound (within reason, of course); orphans?

L – Life is Incomplete Without: Faith in Jesus Christ and our Father in Heaven. Or Pringles. Or forgiveness. Or Chapstick.

M – Marriage Date: March 28, 1998 (I picked March because it begins with M and the 28th because that’s my birth date in May (write that down because I like gifts if they’re EXACTLY what I ask for or VERY sentimental or thoughtful) – so all Ben needs to do is remember the 28th in any Month that starts with M).

N – Number of Siblings: One younger brother (by 7 yrs), Jason, who was almost Matthew. We’re not uber close but I love him and glad he’s a good guy. Then there are Ben’s siblings: Bridgette & Mark, Britanny & Jake, Brett, Bryant and Brad.

P – Phobias or Fears: I don’t do well with heights. My fear is my children getting hurt, maimed or killed (especially in the street).

Q – Fave Quote: You’re unique; just like everyone else. –and- You don’t make time. Time is always there. You just decide what to do with it. – Yours truly

R – Reason to Smile: My children who are the funniest kids I know. Or when my husband makes me laugh (he can really make me bust a gut even though he’s not a comedian).

S – Season: Fall for the crisp air, turning leaves, sweaters, bundling up on the couch, cider, Hot Pumpkin Surprise Cake with fresh whipped cream, sunsets and fireplaces.

T – Tag 3 or 4 People: b., cjane, elpasorepresentyo, formerly phread.

U – Unknown Fact About Me: Not much that people don’t know about me because I’m too honest. I had breast reduction surgery in 1994 and hope to again now that I’m done having kids.

V – Vegetable You Don’t Like: Green peppers; abhor them but wish I liked them.

W – Worst Habit: Chewing my finger skin (not my nails). Buying things on sale BECAUSE they’re on sale (thinking that I’ll have use for them someday).

X – X-rays You’ve Had: As a baby with broken femur, right middle finger (basketball) and back.

Y – Your Fave Food: Anything with a white sauce (preferably Alfredo), medium-rare filet mignon, peanut butter cookies, Tom Kah Gai, Bags of Gold, chocolate & Wendy’s fries (but not all in the same meal).

Z – Zodiac Sign: Gemini but I don’t put much stock in the Zodiac. I do, however, have a fun time with the Chinese New Year. This (2007) is MY year (the Boar) beginning February 18th when it officially begins.
