Kitchen Microplaner and Target

by Lucky Red Hen on September 20, 2006

Today I had a day off so Piper and I trudged off to find shoes (found a pair at Famous Footwear only to be disappointed, yet again, that my gigantic size 11 shoe size wasn’t available in the style I wanted). While browsing the aisles at Target (specifically the end-caps with all the clearance goodies), I remembered that I wanted to buy teaspoon/tablespoon measuring cups that you can see from standing.

Finding only the cup sizes and not smaller I asked a nice girl in red and khaki for help (if you wear that color at Target you’re GONNA get asked questions; luckily she’s an employee). She led me right to them (honestly, they were packaged in 3’s and hanging up instead of sitting next to all the other measuring cups – about 24″ in front of where I was; embarrassing).

As I walked away to glance at the George Foreman’s (I need to replace the one I threw in the garbage – it really is nice to cook with IF you have the removable grills that can go in the dishwasher), another lady asked the helper if they had microplaners. The helper girl, I swear, said they didn’t carry them and told her to buy one at a home improvement store like HOME DEPOT in the woodworking section. Seriously. I couldn’t stand it so I chimed in (because I can’t seem to help myself; I think I get that from my mother) that she could find them at Bed, Bath & Beyond, William-Sonoma, Sur la Table or Orson Gygi but to definitely find the one with the protective cover. She was thrilled I knew Orson Gygi and asked me more about the microplaner and what I use it for (lemons, limes, chocolate, ginger root, Parmesan and other hard cheeses). Then a friend of hers popped up next to us and said, “I can’t believe the people they let into this store!” as a joke and giggle, of course. We all chatted a little about the microplaner then she (the new lady, Laurie) asked us for our opinion on the purple bath rug and toilet seat cover she had in her arms, “I’m not really in love with these but my bathroom is purple and the white rug & cover are just too hard to keep bright. What do you think of these?” Known for my honest demeanor I told her they’re dumb (sometimes the words I chose aren’t the most intelligent) and I could sense why she didn’t like them either. “Try the looped-style instead,” I suggested. “I saw those but the color is a dusty purple, with a little gray undertone, not the same purple as my other bathroom things,” she replied. “Well, the texture would give you the look you want and you don’t have to be so matchy-matchy on the purple or it’ll be overkill in there,” I retorted (is that the right term?). Her eyes lit up, she headed off to the bath section and came back with my suggested rug & cover then reported proudly, “The rug is even on CLEARANCE! I’m so glad I ran into you and got an honest answer because I really didn’t like what I picked out before!” Then she introduced herself, I reciprocated, and we all went off happily ever after.

Then we went to Holy Cow (weekend boutique) and I commented to a gal walking out that I liked her purchase that was setting on top of her stroller; she smiled and did small chit-chat as we walked past each other. The man inside selling soup and dip seasoning packets chatted it up with me until I noticed and mentioned to him that the Scrumptious Spinach Dip was spelled on his display as “scrupmtious”; he said that signs been that way for 4 years and nobody’s said anything about it. Then I schooled a young girl (by young I mean about 20ish) on The Mod Bod shirts while the booth girl was busy with customers; she was glad because she found the exact one she wanted and it was ON SALE (in case you’re in the area… it’s the Holy Cow at the PG recreation center until this Saturday and The Mod Bod has about 6 colors in all styles on sale for $7.95). On our way back to the car I noticed a lady with an embroidered denim jacket on and said, “I love your embroidered jacket!” Once she realized I was talking to her (because her daughter, who was with her, bumped her and repeated what I said), she looked back confused-like and said thanks.

I talk to strangers – is that strange (because it seems to be, sometimes, to others)?

M.I.A. (missing-in-action)

by Lucky Red Hen on September 18, 2006

Honestly, I’m not M.I.A.; I’m an intern with my idol photographer, Davina Fear.

This lasts for 6wks so I’m stuffing in as much time with her as possible. Forgive me for neglecting my peeps – you are all in my thoughts ;o)

I do read your blogs, when I have a tiny bit of down-time or waiting for pictures to download, so keep ’em up!

Luv, me

"Excuse me, where's the toilet paper?"

by Lucky Red Hen on September 2, 2006

There’s something about me.

Something that makes people think I wear one of those blue vests that reads “How may I help you?”

Today it happened twice while shopping/browsing/people-watching at Swiss Days in Midway, Utah. Cathy is my witness.

Actually, now that I’m recalling the instances, I think it was 3 times.

Anyway, this happens everywhere I go; Walmart, Target, the grocery store, boutiques, etc.

Them: “Excuse me, where’s the toilet paper?”
Me: Well, I don’t work here but it’s 1/2 way down on aisle 3.

Them: “What size is this bracelet?”
Me: This isn’t my booth, but it looks like it’s for a 3-5 year old.

Them: “Do you have anymore of these?”
Me: No, I don’t.

Them: “How much is this?”
Me: $13.95 or 2 for $25.

Them: “What’s this for?”
Me: It cleans out ear wax.

Them: “Do you have these in my size?”
Me: No because your size shouldn’t wear things like this.

Day 4 of What I Did (or did not do) Today

by Lucky Red Hen on July 15, 2006

Honestly can’t remember exactly what I did today. I’m lying in bed trying to think and nothing’s coming. Did dishes and wiped the counters. Windex’d the bathroom mirrors & showered. Went to my photo shoot in Provo at 2pm and got back about 4. Used my last check to pay the babysitter then picked up another sitter at 5pm so daddy and I could go to dinner/movie. Here’s the thing though. We’ve been hearing all this hooplah over the new theaters between I-15 and Jordan Landing off Bangerter but once we got there it wasn’t worth the drive (and all the stop lights – what the…). Got to visit with hubby about life and stuff though, so that’s worth the time it took to get there. His golfing took longer than expected so I had to scramble for a sitter to make my appointment. He got an earful for that one – I just want a phonecall early enough to take care of things. We saw Pirates – felt a little empty at the end but enjoyed it nonetheless. Called Karen on the way home; she and her sister live right off Bangerter. The were just in Wyoming for a cancer walk/run; they started at 4pm yesterday and stopped at 10am today then drove back to Draper from Wyoming – crazy. The sister, Heather, is a cancer survivor! At home I was unable to find new checks so I told the sitter I’d have to get it to her later. Then she reminded me I didn’t pay her the last time either. EEK! We went to the calendar and there it is, plain as day, that I still owe her for last time. What a loser I am! I guess I’ll be tipping when I find the checks! As I pulled back up in our driveway I saw fireworks and ran inside to pull Jack out of bed to watch. He didn’t understand why I was yanking him out of bed at first, probably thought he was in trouble, but it was worth his surprised look. We’re not sure who’s fireworks they were (it’s July 15th) and they were LONG. I got tired of watching them after a while – isn’t that sad? So I went downstairs to grab my laptop and by the time I was coming back up they were at the finale. Perfect timing. So Jack’s in bed, daddy’s next to me programming on his laptop, Piper’s asleep (she had a nap today so hopefully she’ll saw logs tonight) and Posie is in her kennel. Tomorrow morning is church; 9am sharp but we try getting there 15 minutes early. If I get to bed this time I might have luck getting there on time. It’s 10:47pm – so I’ve got a chance for a good nights sleep!

Day 2 of What I Did (or did not do) Today

by Lucky Red Hen on July 13, 2006

Since I went to bed pretty late last night (1ish, I think), this morning was tough for me to wake. The dog needed to go outside and do her business (she’s an entrepreneur) and woke me earlier than I would’ve liked. Lack of sleep and getting woken up before my time gets me either 1) cranky or 2) a migraine or 3) pissy. So I ate some Pops instead of my Kashi Go Lean then layed on the couch on the laptop looking for motorcycle boots while my kids played video games and hubby programmed on his laptop. Daddy (that’s what I call him – an omage to Ozzy Osbourne, Sharon calls him that and I find it endearing) made him & the kids lunch while I scarfed down my famous Dill Chicken Pasta Salad (no, I don’t have a recipe – I wing it – so you can ask all you want but I won’t create one either). P played Dora on the computer for 10 minutes then I put her down for a nap (at 3yrs old it’s awfully tricky sometimes) and tried to take one as well since I had a migraine by then (doesn’t mean I wasn’t cranky or pissy though – double negative, that’s ~j’s favorite). An hour later I still wasn’t asleep and daddy walked in to save the day. Told P to get up, she hadn’t fallen asleep either, and tell daddy mommy’s trying to take a nap. I tossed and turned and still didn’t go to sleep. Then I remembered something my mom told me about headaches. I won’t divulge details but instead of doing what she suggested I thought of something else that’s close to it. Tried but it didn’t do the trick so I just got up and showered (finally). Then I remembered our neighborhood BBQ was in a couple hours and I wasn’t prepared (no shock there). I asked P to go with me to the grocery store but she didn’t want to. After a while my 6yr old said he wanted to go with me (which is shocking because he usually fights me when I try getting him to) then P piped up and said she wanted to go; she is J’s little copy-cat. We toddled off to Macy’s and ran into my friend TS, who I haven’t seen in a LONG time since she lives in Orem and that’s so far away (heehee). The kids played the shy act (which is the thing that annoys me the most lately), we exchanged our new cell phone #’s and she gave me a magazine that she’s in this month after promising to get together at the pool with our kids to catch up. Inside J picked out the hotdogs (at the deli, they’re HUGE) and selected a bunch of fresh green beans (courtesy of my mom turning him on to fresh green beans her last visit) and P and I selected Tang for the cooler we would take to the BBQ. Paid for our stuff then remembered that I forgot the ice so I stepped back to the same cashier and charged $1.06 for a bag of ice. She gave the kids suckers that kept them sane until we got home.

*I actually finished this whole post, selected all to then do the spell check and it erased every last word. The Recover Post button gave me back 1/3 so now I’m going to breeze through, which might’ve been the reason why this happened to me — to speed up the process in the future.*

Went to the BBQ with a migraine (but I took 2 Excedrine Migraine pills before I left — they work wonders with my headaches), saw people, told my hubby I’m so lucky to have him and I love him then walked home with the kids. Oh, before walking home there was a young girl driving down the street and got to the end that’s blocked of where she got pissy, turned around and drove faster-than-she-should’ve back out almost taking out a couple kids, mine being 2 of them. “She’s ephen kidding me!” or something to that matter but using the “ephen” to emphasize my seriousness. When I see her again in that piece of crap car I will be giving her my 2 cents. Talked with the north neighbor about his river that runs through my property when he waters the grass, melatonin with his pharmasist wife and scout camp next week then went in to put the kids to bed. Read a book and was ready for teeth brushing when P came to me with the toothpaste container in her mouth (the dispensing end in her mouth) – I snapped at her so she cried and refused to brush. I coaxed her into letting me and we got through it. She has this thing about putting her brother to bed (if we turn off the light she’ll freak out, turn the light back ON so that she can turn it OFF), giving him a kiff and shutting his door.

They’re in bed so I came down and watched this weeks “So You Think You Can Dance” on the DVR but last nights performances got cut out so I didn’t get to see them (ticked). I’m bummed that Musa was eliminated because he’s hot and I like watching him with Natalie – she bawled and I almost did for her. After that a little SNL with Matthew Perry playing Joey on Friends and Quinton playing Chandler like a wierd gay guy. Then it was Dr. 90210 but it’s a rerun about labiaplasty, breast reduction on a female to male transitioner and anal bleaching.

H showed up at 11:30pm in my driveway but called before she tried coming in (okay because my door is always locked anyway). Luckily I had my phone with me (I usually don’t, that’s why I’m bad at answering it). Hubby returned shortly after that and she left about 12:30am.

Now I’m spent and should’ve been in bed hours ago. I hope I get a goodnight’s sleep so I don’t drag tomorrow. I think I’ll put the dog in J’s room so he can take her out in the morning and I might get a few minutes more shut-eye. At least not get woken up before my time.

“Why DON’T you want to look at porn?”

by Lucky Red Hen on June 9, 2006

This question was asked of me while I was closing a blog after barely logging on. The blog belongs to someone I love so I really tried to read what he had written but pretty-much-naked chicks in provocative poses kept popping up everywhere and I couldn’t read without being forced to navigate around them. Even the friends that left comments had porn-like avatars and animated critters bouncing their naked boobies.

Now, I’m not so prude that I can’t move my browser box to cover the offensive material and continue on with the reading. But the pictures kept following me and popping up where I was trying to read. There was a slide show running on the side with a different girl in each frame, barely covering her nips and/or foliage — extremely distracting.

No wonder it’s so hard for kids and adults to avoid the addictive trap of pornography.

So I closed the page altogether and was instantly attacked with the following:

“You’re not even going to read what he wrote?” in a snippy tone.

No, I don’t want to look at porn while trying to.

“Why DON’T you want to look at porn?” in an accusatory tone.

Um…

I’m not sure how to answer that. I’m sure y’all can imagine people being asked “Why DO you look at porn?” But I was caught off guard with the question the other way around. So I’ll use this forum to write a simple reason —

I believe there is a time and place for provocative nudity… in private with your spouse.

That is what I believe. There is nothing wrong with my POV just because it might contradict yours. My perspective does not harm anyone so there is no basis for an argument. I DO NOT love this person ANY LESS because he choses this behavior. That’s not the kind of person I am. I DO NOT feel that I am a BETTER person because I am against porn. I’m not that kind of person either. Because the question was asked of me I just wanted to give an answer.

And there you have it.
