31 Days of Head Shots #8 Elder

by Lucky Red Hen on October 8, 2012

This guy was serving his LDS mission in the Seattle area and said he didn’t have a photo on his plaque at home (that’s where I come in). The first one ended up on his plaque, the second, showing WHO he is, not just what he looks like, ended up on a poster.

What? A poster? Yes. Apparently I hit the wrong button when I ordered prints and upon pick-up they handed me a giant poster of this handsome fella. What in the world am I going to do with THIS?!? Well, it’s turned into a fun souvenir of our time in Seattle. I pull it out when showing people options for photo print sizes. Yes, poster IS an option.

Today is his birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

31 Days of Head Shots #7 Melissa

by Lucky Red Hen on October 7, 2012

Speaking of singles, check out this hottie! Mel runs marathon’s, triathalon’s, Iron Man’s, you name it. Her shoe selection rivals Nordstrom Rack’s (she has fur-covered heels for church… FUR!), and her outfits are always stylin’. As fit as she is you wouldn’t think she ate sweets, but you should see her perfectly-frosted cupcakes. If she didn’t have a day job, I’d want her to spend all her time making and selling cupcakes (I prefer the mini-sized because they’re easier to get in my mouth than the normal ones that make me dislocate my jaw like a snake to get a proper ratio of frosting to cake and usually end up with frosting all over my face).

Do you know an awesome eligible bachelor in the SLC area who could keep up with this honey? I’ll pass along referrals and might share the 10% finders fee if they get married. Just kidding. I don’t share.

31 Days of Head Shots #6 Cameron

by Lucky Red Hen on October 6, 2012

Without giving away my age (his birthday is the day before mine, slightly different year), I’ve known this guy all his life since I started babysitting him and his brothers when he was just eight weeks old.

Bless his cute heart he invited me to lunch when he was coming to town from five hours across state. I raised him right! Not knowing when I’d get to squeeze him again, I brought my camera to snap a few pics next to the mall in the parking garage. He said (like many people do) that he’s not photogenic and doesn’t like being in front of the camera. Um, Cameron, look at yourself. You were BORN for the camera!

Besides, his name is pretty close to camera, so you’d think it’d be easy. He also SAVES LIVES working at the fire department AND emergency paramedic flight crew, so he’s got good karma on his side and that always looks good in pictures.

Ladies, he’s not married, but you have to be incredibly awesome for me to approve.

31 Days of Head Shots #5 Natasha

by Lucky Red Hen on October 5, 2012

Don’t you just love the sparkly bokeh background as the sun sprinkles through the leaves? It’s magical, just like Tasha’s outdoor wedding a couple years ago. It was a lovely day with wonderfully happy people all around.

Some weddings have drama, but this one didn’t (phew). Tasha was so sweet all day long and rocked the camera, making my job easier. She’s also the BOMB hair stylist whom I wish lived near (one of the bummers of moving so far away is searching for someone new to do the ‘do). Brides are always so pretty!

31 Days of Head Shots #4 H.C.

by Lucky Red Hen on October 4, 2012

Fall has officially begun so the Hot Chocolate must come out! Haha, I crack myself up.

There is so much to say about this fella and his family, but I’m supposed to be keeping these 31 Days of posts brief. Since this is about head shots, I’ll share with you how Demetrye was my FIRST EVER darker-skinned subject.

That sounds awful, doesn’t it? Being politically correct with words these days is tricky. I’m not even sure what the accepted verbiage is to keep me out of trouble. I only bring this up because the point of the photo shoot was to practice. It was a photography gathering in Seattle’s Gas Works Park; the subject got free images and the photographers got to practice their skills. Knowing how to properly expose for skin color is key to beautiful portraits. Luckily, Demetrye is married to a very light-skinned photographer (Hi Elena! Miss you!) and understood that I was genuine in my desire to make him look as delicious as possible.

And delicious he is, enough so that his years-long nickname has been Hot Chocolate (H.C. when we’re being brief). To be fair, he reciprocated and gave ME my own nickname. Can you guess what it is?

Answer: Vanilla Chocolate

31 Days of Head Shots #3 Emily

by Lucky Red Hen on October 3, 2012

THIS lovely lady is Emily White from San Antonio, Texas. We met on Twitter when I lived in Seattle, fell in love, and the rest is history.

No, really. People think it’s strange that I’d fly by myself to a place I’ve never been, stay with people whom I’ve never met for five days in their home, and live to tell about it (Look! I wasn’t made into a skin suit!) Some people you just connect with as if you’ve always known each other and you can’t explain how that happens. It just does.

Emily White Designs (formerly known as The Blog Fairy) is also the genius behind my blog design. She’s usually available for small design (banners, buttons, favicon, etc.) at a reasonable rate. For large, from-scratch, and re-haul design jobs, get on her wait list because she’s booked through 2012. She’s THAT awesome (as the second photo attests)!

P.S. Both photos were taken after we lunched with Hildie of BeehiveAndBirdsnest.com at an Austin food truck. Neither of us had met her either. See? A perfect friendship! (Depending on when you go to her blog, you may see the photo I took of her as her profile pic.)

P.P.S. If you want proof of my San Antonio trip (or need to pass some time), here’s the link to my photo-filled blog post about it.

31 Days of Head Shots #2 Ben

by Lucky Red Hen on October 2, 2012

Oh hi, handsome (he’s my husband)! So maybe this one is cheating because it wasn’t a set-up, formal session. You don’t mind me gushing over my AMAZING man, do you?

But look at that face, and the light, and the mellow colors (plus, it IS his head that I shot, hardy hardy har). This is also a genuine, authentic, this-is-me smile, which is the PERFECT time to push the shutter.

P.S. I love him.

31 Days of… HEAD SHOTS #1 Emilienne

by Lucky Red Hen on October 1, 2012

A couple days ago, a friend suggested we join in on an October “31 Days of…” link party via The Nester (supposed to be the same subject, and short; so I’ll post one or two photo’s with a little snippet about ’em so you can come back for a quick fix every day). It was her idea that I blog head shots; if you don’t like my topic blame her (kidding, kinda).

Let’s start off with one of my favorite sessions in Bellevue, WA with Emilienne (isn’t that a great name?) for our friend Rachel’s hair and make-up biz. It was a bit chilly (I think it started sprinkling as we finished), but we were blessed with some lovely light, a resilient model, and delicious bokeh from my 85mm f/1.8 Canon lens.
